Centenary of fatal shooting in Cloughjordan

Tooher’s Hotel, Cloughjordan

The centenary of the fatal shooting of Constable William Maxwell of the RIC in Tooher’s Hotel, Cloughjordan, occurs on November 2nd. Constable Maxwell along with Constable Savage were drinking in Tooher’s Hotel (see photo) when they were fired on by members of the 2nd Battalion IRA comprising of men from the Cloughjordan and Toomevara Companies.

Despite the restrictions due to Covid-19, the management at the Thomas MacDonagh Museum has been busy behind the scenes. In spite of closures and limited opening hours we have just completed and submitted our application to the Heritage Council for full accreditation in the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland. The awarding of the highest standard nationally will be a major achievement for a volunteer-managed museum, and will put us in company with the likes of the Tipperary County Museum, the Hunt Museum, the Chester Beatty Library and the National Gallery of Ireland!

Cloughjordan Heritage Week Programme

To celebrate our natural heritage, there are two nature walks planned – one hosted by Cloughjordan Naturalists Field Club (Tuesday 18 August at 7.30pm) at Lahile Wood, and the other by Cloughjordan Eco-Congregation (Friday 21 August at 10.30am) at Kyle, Cloughjordan (exploring hedgerows and bog edge). Rachel and Brendan Vaughan will lead both walks. All are welcome.

The Thomas MacDonagh Museum is prepared and ready to reopen at the August weekend; Friday 31 July, Saturday 1st, Sunday 2 and, on bank holiday Monday, 3 August – from 2-4 pm daily. From then on, visitors will be welcome 2-4 pm every weekend. Covid-19 restrictions will be in place. For further information phone 087 3946862

Regional Museums Scheme

This year the Thomas MacDonagh Museum was awarded funding under the Regional Museums Exhibition Scheme. This Scheme, managed by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, is an important support for Ireland’s museum network and recognises the significant contribution made to the cultural heritage of Ireland by the Thomas MacDonagh Museum. Funding has been used for two streams of work related to the care of the collection.
