Michael Collins: The Man and the Revolution
A presentation by Anne Dolan and Will Murphy
The talk will consider the making and remaking of Michael Collins. Examining Collins’s early life, the talk will dwell on his time in London and will consider the forces that shaped his thoughts and ideas. The talk will then look at the many different versions of Collins that have been fashioned and imagined throughout his life and particularly through nearly a century-long afterlife.
In 2018 Anne Dolan collaborated with William Murphy in publishing Michael Collins: The Man and the Revolution.
Dr Anne Dolan is an Associate Professor in Modern Irish History in TCD. As a teacher of the political, social and cultural history of Ireland Anne teaches on twentieth-century Ireland examining the major themes which shaped the century and particularly the Irish revolutionary period, 1912-23.
Dr Will Murphy is a lecturer in the School of History and Geography in DCU. His primary field of research is modern Irish history, with a particular expertise in the history of the Irish revolutionary period.
May 2nd – Sunday at 8 pm
Drama: Taking the Biscuit written and directed by Martin Maguire
This specially commissioned audio play, with visuals, takes place during Easter Week 1916 in Jacob’s Factory Garrison under the command of Commandant Thomas MacDonagh. It is based mainly on documents held in the Military Archives, including testimonies of members of that garrison.
Martin Maguire has written for radio, stage and screen over the last twenty-five years and has more than a dozen plays to his name. Much of his work is devised with casts ranging from youth and community groups to actors in training and drama and music graduates. He has directed a number of international Theatre in Education productions and many successful shows in Ireland.

Modreeny Ambush Centenary
An illustrated talk presented by Ger Heffernan
On this day, one hundred years ago, one of the final military acts in the War of Independence took place. This talk will give a detailed account of the involvement of the Irish Republican Army ‘Flying Column’, local Volunteers and the Royal Irish Constabulary in the Modreeny Ambush.
Ger is a graduate of UCG. Ever since his student days, his interest in history has continued, and has led to his researching and visiting sites of local and international historical interest. He has written about, and presented talks on, aspects of the First World War. In recent years Ger has carried out in-depth research into the Modreeny Ambush, which took place between Cloughjordan and Borrisokane on 3rd June, 1921.
